Packing Tips for an Antarctica Expedition: What You Really Need

If you’re even thinking about visiting Antarctica—go for it! It’s truly one of the most breathtaking, awe-inspiring places on Earth. I promise, no words or photos can fully capture the magic of standing among glaciers, penguins, and endless horizon. It’s the kind of trip that stays with you forever.

But once you’ve said “”yes”” to the adventure of a lifetime, the next big question becomes: What on Earth do I pack?!

As someone who ran into a few luggage hiccups on my own journey (yes, my bag didn’t arrive), I feel well-qualified to give you some real-world packing advice—what you’ll absolutely need, and what you can leave at home.

Start with the Essentials

Pack your most important items in your carry-on. This can’t be stressed enough. Things happen—flights get delayed, bags get lost. Make sure your carry-on includes:

  • A couple of changes of clothes
  • Any medications or personal items
  • Warm base layers
  • A pair of gloves and a hat
  • Any electronics and chargers

Having the basics on hand saved me when my checked luggage went on its own adventure. Trust me on this one—be prepared.

Antarctica in Summer? Surprisingly Mild!

You might be surprised to learn that Antarctic summers aren’t as freezing as you’d think. Of course, it’s not exactly beach weather, but it’s far from the subzero deep freeze you may have in mind.

Most expedition cruise lines will provide you with a heavy parka, and some days, I didn’t even feel I needed mine. What you will need are:

  • Waterproof pants (for zodiac landings—this is non-negotiable)
  • Light gloves and a warm hat
  • Good layers: moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece or two, and a windbreaker
Leave the bulky ski jacket and snow pants behind—they’re just going to take up space.

Everyday Clothing & Onboard Style

This isn’t a trip where you need to dress to impress. Most of your time will be spent exploring outdoors, and even on the ship, the vibe is super casual. I lived in leggings, t-shirts, and the few cozy layers I picked up in a rush after my luggage dilemma—and I was perfectly comfortable the entire trip.

Here’s a golden tip:
Lay out everything you think you’ll need… then cut it in half.
Not only will your suitcase be lighter (thank your future self), but you’ll spend less time unpacking and more time soaking in those glacier views.

Pro Tips

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must (yes, even in Antarctica!)
  • A good camera or phone with plenty of storage—you’ll want to capture every moment
  • Lip balm and moisturizer—the wind and cold can be drying

Final Thought

Packing for Antarctica doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Stick to the essentials, be smart about layers, and remember—the adventure is what you’ll remember, not your outfit.
